Saturday

On Saturday, I needed to go to the post office to get a stamp to mail a postcard. We decided to cycle. The closest post office open on Sat'day is the one downtown. Not too far. We cycled down and man! it just kept getting hotter and hotter and hotter. Damn Houston heat. Then we get to the post office and there's an unusually long queue. Apparently, they have installed "state of the art new software" and the employees are still getting accustomed to it. When I finally got up to the counter, the post office dude couldn't figure out how to ring up my $0.24 stamp, so he gave it to me for free!

I've been wanting to take a picture like this for a long time.

Later that afternoon, we went to the Westheimer Street Festival which unbeknownst to either of us has now morphed into Westfest Compressed. This would explain why the fest was only like 4 blocks.

First band we saw, Chango Jackson. They were pretty good.

Um, this dude is Mic Skills

The dude on the right there is Cinema. Pretty good.

We came to see Perseph 1. She was excellent as usual.

Sing it, grrl!

DH in b-boy stance with Perseph1.

In the evening, we went to the Pan African Festival to check out our good friends, D.R.U.M. Check out this dude and his amazing face art.

D.R.U.M.

Crowd gets into it.

Rasta Gene Kelly (DH made up this caption)

Babygrrl is too. damn. cute.

Both festivals were free. Good times were had by all.

Many updates to be made shortly. Please stay tuned!

Good Decision

So last week I found out that Train would be performing in Houston. I love Train. The first time I saw them live was when they played a summer tour at the (hated) Woodlands Pavilion. They were absolutely awesome live. I know I've said it before but I'm going to say it again and this is probably not the last time but; Pat Monohan: damn, that boy can sing! Damn.

Now, we've seen them perform since the Woodlands show at the Verizon Theatre in Bayou Place. This is where they played this time as well. This venue is fantastic for concerts. With space for 2450 bodies, there's not a bad seat in the house. The dilema of course was not whether we should go, but how we were going to pay for it. I made an executive decision and decided that I needed to go see train for my mental health and wellbeing. Yes, I did. So I took the Kroger money and gave it to Train and God bless them for coming to Houston. I needed to go because it would be a release for me to go and dance and sing my heart out for two hours. Which I did. I pity the chick sitting in front of me. I had my ear plugs in (you have to protect your delicate hearing, you know, all the professionals wear ear plugs, going deaf is just so 1997), so I couldn't hear myself sing a damn thing (I could hear the music fine), but I was just singing along like a fool. It was fabulous.

It was such a good show. They opened with Get Out from the latest album, did a range of songs from all their albums including the songs Meet Virginia, My Private Nation, All American Girl, in between they did an excellent version of Zeppelin's Over the Hills and Far Away (man, the boy can sing) and Drops of Jupiter which they ended with. For the encore, they did Cab and then, Aerosmith's Dream On. When they started Dream On, I lost my mind.

Bliss.

12 years and still clueless

I arrived into the United States for the first time in my life on May 10, 1994. Destination: Austin, Texas. I've been living in the U.S. now for 12 years and 12 days, but I still haven't got a handle on a lot of Americanisms and Texasisms. When you hear the slogan, "Texas, it's like a whole other country", believe it. But's that's a whole other post.

Everyday, I read a particular message board and today one of the ladies asked what everyone was planning for the long weekend? I think to myself, "Long weekend? What long weekend? We have a long weekend? Maybe it's one of those school holiday things. I hope I get a long weekend! How come I don't know about these things and have to find out on bloody message boards?"

So, of course I have to google "US public holidays" to find out what they're talking about. It's Memorial Day! I believe I get that day off. Yay! There will be a Long Weekend for me.

bollocks

Saw 2 Lotuses today.
One at Rice Village, right before we discovered that the restaurant we were going to was closed. I took a picture of the beast, then my camera battery died.
One at Kirby Whole Foods, right after buying some dessert to enjoy for tea.
Has the curse of the Lotus abated?

dammit

Well. I had to be a nosey parker and mooch about and look to see what's coming up on the summer tour schedule for this and that. Couldn't just sit still despite the fact that my wallet contains only 3 cents and a button, now could I?

Now, I've discovered that they are playing here next Thursday. Next Thursday, people!

Dammit.

I. must. go. see. them.

Thought for the day

It says:

The capacity for the individual is infinite
Limitations are largely of habit, convention,
acceptance of things as they are, fear or
lack of self confidence.

I knew it!

USA Today is reporting that NSA has massive database of Americans' phone calls. I knew it! I would always hear these clicking noises on my (land line) phone. I just knew that the conversations were being recorded. I thought that the INS was responsible. Or the BCIS or the DHS or the USCIS or the whatever acronym they're going with nowadays. I would purposefully say random words while on the phone like:
bomb.
Nitrates.
Petroleum.
Terror.
Oklahoma.
Sausage pants.

Maybe that's why the INS/BCIS/DHS/USCIS lost my green card paperwork 3 times during the process.

I bet it is.

::Update::

I just read this, which claims that eavesdropping was not part of the program. I think we all know that there's just no way to prove that it was or wasn't. I just know I had a clicky click phone and it was not static on the line.

Another Exciting Monday Night

If you look hard enough, there are things to do on a tight budget. Last night, DH & I went to The Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural Center and Bookstore to listen to Hill Harper speak about his book, Letters to a Young Brother. The book is an inspirational non-fiction work aimed at young Black men in America. Now, before last night, I had no idea who Hill Harper was. Apparently, he's a famous actor and has a current role on CSI:NY. I had no idea, but a lot of other ladies knew who he was. The room was filled with more women than men. Being neither black, male, or even American for that matter, I came away having learned a little more about this country that I have adopted as home. It's hard enough learning about America, Americans, and being American, I have to learn what it's like to be a black person in America (thanks DH).

He talked about his motivation for writing the book but also, interestingly, the struggle that he went through to get the book published. He met with publishers, all of whom were all very excited to publish a book for him. Just not the book that he had written. "We'll put your face on the cover, how about a cookbook? Or a book about CSI? Or a book about dating!" and so on and so forth. He was able to find a a company to publish the book that he had written and he went on to explain briefly that in the publishing world, it's really difficult to get books of this nature published as hardback. It's more expensive and the publisher wants some sort of guarantee of return before making that type of investment. It was very interesting. He stuck to his guns and got the book published, hardback, colour inserts, embossed type on the cover and $20 sticker price. Alright! I'm looking forward to reading the book.

After he spoke, there was a Q & A followed by a book signing. DH got the book for him to sign. I didn't know it when we first got there, but [gratuitous bragging] DH had already met Hill Harper at the PAFF in Los Angeles when he was screening his documentary. [/gratuitous bragging] ;)

The other interesting thing was the location that the book signing was held in. According to their website, The Shrine of the Black Madonna Cultural Center and Bookstore's
"...purpose has been to contribute to the strengthening of Black People’s identification with the Black experience. In carrying out this mission, the Cultural Centers help us to build a positive Black identity by maintaining our connection to our African heritage and culture."
We visited the Black Holocaust Museum which was eye opening and heart breaking. I would definitely recommend visiting it. It's historical, educational, inspirational and free-of-charge. I didn't get to browse through the books in the bookstore, so I'll have to come back for that. The sanctuary is essentially a room with a dropped ceiling, fairly simple with amazing paintings hanging on the wall. They did happen to have a Hammond B3 and a Leslie, so I can only imagine that the service on Sunday is jamming.

The Hammond.

The Leslie.

All in all, I rate the evening a 7 out of 10, mainly because my stomach was acting like a fool throughout the evening. I blame the leftovers we scarfed down before the event.

Space Invaders

Pet Peeve: I don't like it when people are all up in my face when they talk to me. Hello, can you please stand back? I don't need you leaning in on me when my chair is already backed up against my desk. You are standing so close I can't even see you. Back the hell up. It's infuriating. Of course, some people put it more eloquently than me.

Maybe it's a sign that I have been assimiliated.

Lovely

It's so nice to be headache free. I went to the Dr. yesterday to make sure that my head wasn't going to explode. I'd had a headache since last Tuesday. A tension headache. Why am I so tense? Maybe this, or maybe this, or might be because I'm trying to find a new one of these. This past Tuesday, I had a migraine. Damn you head! The Dr. gave me pills. Pills that make the vice like pain of my headache go away. I'm a happy grrl on headache killing pills.

::Update::
DH said that I shouldn't be "putting all our business out there". No worries. We all know I'm prone to a little theatrics now and then, aren't we all? Despite my affinity for Simply Red songs, I do still have a j-o-b, but I'm looking for a new one to better our standard of living, because as you know, the cost of living just keeps getting higher and higher, despite whether your standard of living increases accordingly.

The Great American Boycott

Today is May 1. May Day, although not usually observed in the United States*, it will be recognized in a different way today. Across the nation, citizen's groups, and unions are calling for a boycott to show the economic power of immigrants. No Work, No School, No Sales, and No Buying. I'm an immigrant and I support this boycott. I followed the letter of the law in my pursuit for residency and it took 10 years navigating the treacherous path of changing laws and improperly trained immigration officials accompanied by paperwork being lost by federal agencies on more than one occasion while being trapped in what breaks down to indentured servitude before I was finally granted that residency. That is my experience as a legal immigrant. I can only imagine the treachery that illegal immigrants face. This is a human rights issue, not a political issue. America needs these people as much as they need America.

In Houston, put on your white T-shirt and show your support.

Houston-1
Place: MEMORIAL PARK, 7300 Memorial Dr and Picnic Lane
Time: 11:00 AM
What: Rally/Gathering

Activities:
  • Testimonies of Immigrants
  • Workshops of Civic Participation
  • Voter Registration
  • Letter Writing Campaign to Petition for Permanent Residency
  • Each person takes their food, water and soft drinks for a Day of Festivities in the park.

What we want:
  • We all support just treatment for immigrants, their dignity and rights.
  • We all support comprehensive immigration reform, especially permanent residency for all who need this protection.
  • We all reject the criminalization of immigrants and those who associate/assist them.

The manner to show support on May 1:

  • Place a WHITE RIBBON, AMERICAN FLAG AND THE PHRASE "IN GOD WE TRUST" on all cars, motor vehicles, homes, businesses, agencies and worksites (if granted permission).
  • No buying or selling on that day. Especially the purchase of gasoline or any other product. Close your business on that day.
  • Do not work. Ask for permission or let your boss know of your absence. Do not risk your job since the law permits the employer the absolute decision to fire anyone without a reason. Because of this, be sure of your decision to leave work without permission as the law supports your employer decision and no one can change that.
  • Being absent from your routine activities and their consequences are considerations each individual must make and so, to participate on this day is a conscious decision of each individual. Nonetheless, as we have described above, there are many ways to show support without running risks.
