I know why

My best friend's father has passed away. He called me today morning at the office to let me know. It was not sudden, it was not unexpected, just. He was sick, we knew he was dying. I knew when I saw him in SG over Christmas that I would never see him again. I've known his father since I was 18. Back then, he was the stern father that you didn't mess with. Over the years, I have grown to love and respect him. He will be missed.

The weight

Must be the weather. All drippy and slippy. Dirty and hard to see. And this Texas HotCold is does nothing for me. It's been a slow week and it's dragging. Plus I'm dragging. Ever get into a funk and there's no real reason why? Being happy takes effort. It's hard work and I guess I'm just tired of working right now. I'm taking a vacation from happy. A slow drive into the winding roads of melancholy. Why not? We all need to, sometimes. I'm taking a mental health day.

Random Tuesday

It's raining outside. Lightly. Not really a problem, except I lost my umbrella 6 months ago and I still haven't found it. I didn't leave it somewhere, but I can't locate it in the car or in the house or whereever. So I'm umbrella-less. Hopefully it'll clear up before I have to leave.

We have a date!

/begin shameless self-promotion/

As you know, my DH directed the documentary, Electric Purgatory: the fate of the black rocker. The film has been doing the rounds at different film festivals and on 10 April, 2006, Electric Purgatory will have it's Asian Premiere at the 19th Singapore International Film Festival. Ta-dah! The screening is at 9 PM at the Goethe-Institut on Penang Road. It is free admission, so you have no excuse not to go, OK? The score for the film was written in part and wholly produced by another Singaporean, whom you may remember from his days in DNA on Pony Canyon in the early 90s. If you remember that, then we seriously need to meet for tea the next time we're in SG. Back to the point. I hope you can go see the film, tell your friends and go. It's FREE.

Full

It seems like today was a day of eating. I had to attend an early morning client meeting with zee boss at the restaurant at the Houstonian, Olivette. I feasted on their amazing waffle with berries drizzled with syrup. mmmmmm. Funny thing happened while we were there. Well maybe it would have been funny, if it happened once, but it happened three times. Three different waiters came over to attempt to refill my not-even-empty cup of tea with coffee! Why would you do that? Just because it has milk in it, doesn't make it coffee. Leave my tea alone, people! We get back to the office at 10:30 am I'm so full of yummy waffle. I get a call from my girl, H2O, asking if we can have lunch at Aunti-Pasto's because she's in the mood for their Snapper Meuniere. I try and sell Piatto di Santi, but she wants nothing to do with that at all!. We go to Aunti-Pasto's and have a yummy but a-bit-too-early lunch at noon.* By the time I get back to the office, I'm literally waddling in. I can't even think about dinner right now. Dinner disgusts me. urgh.

* what do you think I had? Aunti-Pasto's = eggplant sandwich. I told you I have an eggplant problem.

Queen in SG, Bear arrested!

OK, first of all, I had no idea that the Queen of England was going to visit. This is very interesting. Second of all, why is this poor bear being shoved into a police van. Well, apparently, said bear is actually Australian Jodi Ruckley who was protesting the use of the palace's Houseguards bearskin hats, outside the Istana, which I suppose can be construed to be Singapore's version of Buckingham Palace. I can only imagine what happened when the poor Singapore police officers went to get rid of Ms. Ruckley.
"Er, 'skew me er, bear ah. You cannot stand there, please move along." Or some such conversation must have transpired.
Poor thing, she must have been sweltering in her lovely bear suit. See more hilarious photos here. Speaking of hot. I noticed in the pictures of the queen that she was wearing gloves. My first thought was, "good God woman, are you mad? It's like the surface of the sun over there." But then I thought, well she's probably wearing gloves so she doesn't have to defile her royal hands by touching us common folk. Makes sense now, doesn't it.

Tiger Beer comes to Houston!!

Yay! So excited! Yay! It will be brewed by Asia Pacific Breweries and imported by Anheuser-Busch. This is v. exciting news. I saw it on tomorrow.sg and my eyes almost popped out of my head. Now, I don't drink too much beer these days. And I used to drink Tiger and buy it duty free to bring back for nostalgic reasons. I would horde and ration out the cans of beer that I had. I'm not a beer connoiseur but it'll be cool to drink it every now and then, without having to go to SG to do it. I know you can get it on the coasts but it never made it to Texas. Cool!

hah!

So here's how it played out. I came home early and Little Miss Kitkat was all meow, meow, meow happy to see me. I spent some time with her and giving her attention. Got her dinner out and starting working on mine. She was doing her usual stuff that she does in the evening. I have dinner and starting watching American Idol, as was the plan. I'm waiting for the extra attention from kitkat like what I got when DH went to L.A. but it's not happening. No problem. Half way through AI, I go to the bedroom to find her curled up on DH's t-shirt that he left on the bed. Well, I guess I know where I stand. I go back to watching AI. Alone. Sans cat. Is it bad to be jealous of a cat? Gah!

More screenings

DH is on his way to Atlanta today for another festival screening. It's always hectic right before he leaves and I always worry about him while he's away. Traveling can be stressful in and of itself. I have been tracking his flight, like I always do and today his departing flight from Houston was delayed by 1 hour. grrrr. I can only imagine his frustrations. I hope it gets better once he gets to Atlanta.

I'm looking forward to an evening curled up with the kitkat and American Idol. She always gives me so much more attention when her man is not around. Yes, I admit it, I wish that cat gave me half the laptime that she gives DH. It just doesn't seem fair. I was the one who rescued her and convinced DH to let us keep her. And I do give her special scritches and attention. But she just lurves on DH. :P

Highlight of today

DH is on spring break and we had lunch today. It's always a special treat to meet him for lunch and even more special when he suggests it. We went to the outstanding Piatto di Santi on Bissonnet that I have written about before. I have to write again how damn bloody good this restaurant is. I believe it has surpassed Pepino's as my favourite Italian place in Houston. Can you believe it? I lovelovelove pasta, of course. What female doesn't? And like most Singaporeans, I love good food. Even though I haven't lived in SG for quite some time, I still retain all rights and privileges and still continue the National Tradition of being a Professional Foodie, thank you.

Losing my language

I have a bad habit of reading too fast. So fast that sometimes I misread things. Like today I read a Yahoo news headline that said, "Giant mum on steroid claims against Bonds". I thought to myself, "man, who is this giant mum that they are talking about? that's very odd". The actual headline read "Giants mum on steroid claims against Bonds". What a difference one letter can make. Of course, I'm sure that this stems from 1) my lack of sports knowledge and 2) my speedy reading problem which in turn I am sure is due to my lack of patience for slow anything. I need fast thoughts and fast ideas and even faster comprehension. If you can't keep up, you will be left behind! Damn, that's arrogant. {Mental note} must try to be less arrogant and slow down! Remember that time you got a speeding ticket on your birthday?{/Mental note} And besides, it's obvious that I'm too fast for myself, what with misreading this and that. Also trying to work on that multi tasking thing, which I haven't made any progress in considering that while writing this entry, I was working in Illustrator and Photoshop and Word laying out a label template and printing it to check.

New Word Tuesday

Today, I learned a new word: dooced; which means to lose one’s job because of one’s website. hmmm. This is serious stuff. It originated here, happened here and here and here (Gah!). I kinda made it a rule to myself not to talk about The Job, although I have broken the rule every now and then. I try to be vague and not give any names and dates. Because, you know, if I started to write about The Job, that's all this blog would be about. Oh dear. I've said too much.

Back to the point. Blogger has tips on how not to get fired because of your blog. As does this guy. Something to think about.

# 101!

Ta-dah! This is post number 101. I was going to make a hoo-hah about post number 100, i.e. yesterday's post, but obviously forgot. So I will celebrate post number 101! I read a really interesting entry about Singapore business etiquette which serves well to describe to someone who's never been to SG what to really expect, about the culture and the people. And I saw some amazing photos taken by migrant workers in Singapore. These workers come from Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, the Philippines, PRC and other neighbouring countries. They do the jobs that migrant workers in any country do. It gave me a glimpse into a world I have never seen.
